Petit arbrisseau à port buissonnant à rameaux dressés, aux petites feuilles obovales à rapport longueur/largeur compris entre 1.5 et 3.5. Elles sont densément imbriquées, vertes-argentées à pubescence soyeuse cachant l’épiderme, coriaces. Les jeunes rameaux sont soyeux-argentés. Les fleurs se trouvent dans les rameaux terminaux. Elles sont d’un jaune sale, les tépales sont soyeux à l’extérieur.

Pour les espèces proches, voir fiche Thymelaea tartonraira. Thymelaea tartonraira subsp. thomasii a des feuilles et jeunes rameaux glabrescents (tous soyeux-argentés chez subsp. tartonraira). Thymelaea tartonraira subsp. transiens est une plante non littorale a feuilles allongées dont le rapport longueur/largeur est compris entre 3 et 5 à pilosité ne cachant pas toujours l’épiderme (subsp. tartonraira est une plante littorale, à feuilles plus larges à rapport L/l compris entre 1.5 et 3.5, à pilosité cachant toujours l’épiderme).

Biologie - éthologie
Espèce de chaméphyte (plante ligneuse basse) appartenant à la petite famille des Thymelaeaceae. Famille à fleurs assez caractéristiques à 4 tépales soudés en tube à leur base, avec 8 étamines (parfois 4 visibles uniquement). En France, cette famille est représentée par les Daphne et les Thymelaea. Thymelaea tartonraira compte 3 sous-espèces en France : subsp. tartonraira, subsp. transiens et subsp. thomasii. Thymelaea tartonraira subsp. tartonraira est une espèce polygame-dioïque, entomogame, et endozoochore.
Biogéographie et écologie
Sous-espèce nord-méditerranéenne : France, Italie, Grèce, Maroc et Iles méditerranéennes. Thymelaea tartonraira subsp. tartonraira est une plante du littoral méditerranéen où elle pousse dans les pelouses, rocailles et fruticées halophiles.

Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").
