Taille : 8-15 mm
Diagnose :
Corps massif, les élytres un peu plus longs que larges, noir couvert d’une pubescence noire variée de taches fauves avec une tache apicale transverse crème. Les pattes et antennes sont noires. La tête est couverte de pubescence fauve, transverse avec un rostre également transverse. Les antennes atteignent le milieu du pronotum. Elles se terminent par une nette massue de 3 articles. Le pronotum est nettement transverse, anguleusement élargi au milieu de ses côtés, sa surface inégale, bosselée.
Identification :
Assez facile.
Confusions possibles :
Sphinctotropis corsica est plus petit, moins massif, avec un rostre allongé et des antennes plus longues.
Périodes d’observation (adultes) : Mai à octobre.
Biologie-éthologie :
Les larves se développent dans les troncs décomposés de divers arbres feuillus, notamment les hêtres. Les adultes se rencontrent sur ces troncs.
Biogéographie-écologie :
Forêts de feuillus de toute l’Europe.
