La couleur de fond des ailes antérieures est brun-noir teintée de gris-violacé et de roux ; cellule discale noire faisant ressortir l'orbiculaire, la réniforme et des nervures grisâtre-roux ; claviforme présente ; lignes basale et post-discale noires et doubles ; ligne submarginale grise soulignée d'une bande brun-noir diffuse ; base des franges soulignée par de petits points noirs. Dessus des ailes postérieures de couleur jaunâtre qui s'assombrit dans l'aire terminale ; nervures surlignées d'écailles foncées et franges claires.
Détermination :
L'adulte est assez facile à identifier.
Espèces proches :
En France métropolitaine, elle peut être confondue avec d'autres espèces d'Euxoa, néanmoins ces caractéristiques alaires permettent une détermination visuelle fiable, seule certaines formes d'Euxoa tritici (Noctuelle cryptée) montrent quelques ressemblances, mais contrairement à Euxoa recussa, les ailes antérieures sont pourvues de dessins cunéiformes dans l'aire subterminale.
Période d’observation :
Les adultes volent de juillet à septembre.
Biologie-éthologie :
Euxoa recussa a une génération par an. L'adulte est actif de nuit. Polyphage, la chenille se nourrit de nombreuses racines de graminées et de plantes basses. C'est à ce stade que l'espèce hiverne.
Biogéographique et écologie :
Eurasiatique boréo-alpine, l'aire de répartition de l'Agrotide refoulée est dissociée en deux entités disjointes: l'une s'étire sur les massifs montagneux d’Europe méridionale et centrale (Pyrénées, Massif central, Alpes, Apennins, Carpates), l’autre s'étire des plaines septentrionales de l'Europe à travers la Russie jusqu’à la région de l'Amour. Le papillon apprécie les pelouses et les prairies méso-xérophiles d'altitude. Il est noté de l'étage montagnard à alpin.

Certain presence
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").

In the state of knowledge, we can not comment on the presence or absence in the current department. This is the default status when not comprised in one of the previous categories or whenever there is doubt.
