A l'allure quelque peu trapue, elle arbore une couleur gris-brun à brun-rouge avec le dessous du corps jaune. Les lobes latéraux du pronotum sont noirs et ornés d'une large bande marginale blanchâtre aux bords ben délimités.
Taille : mâle : 14-17 mm, femelle : 17-21 mm.
Espèce d'Europe orientale, elle atteint dans le sud de la France la limite ouest de son aire de répartition. Elle y est très rare est n'est mentionnée que des Alpes Maritimes.
Observée entre 280 et 1600 m d'altitude, elle côtoie les lisières de forêt et les clairières, les champs abandonnés, les prairies et les pâturages envahis de buissons.
Elle a des besoins en chaleur plus importants que ceux d'autres Pholidopteramais a besoin d'assez d'humidité pour son développement.
La decticelle se tient généralement invisible dans l'herbe ou entre les feuilles. Elle s'avance souvent des les prairies. Son chant consiste en un court triolet.
Les adultes sont visibles de juillet à octobre.
Il est à craindre que les méthodes modernes d'agriculture ne lui soient néfastes
