Imago mâle avec tête et partie dorsale du thorax brun-jaune, marqué de bandes foncée et jaunâtre sur les côtés du pronotum. Yeux composés bruns. Pattes antérieures brun-foncé, les autres plus claires, le fémur marqué de rougeâtre vers son centre. Ailes antérieures transparentes, hyalines, légèrement teintées de jaunâtre, aux nervures brun-noir, aire ptérygostigmatique gris-brun. Abdomen aux tergites II à VIII brun-jaune, marge postérieure bordée de brun-rougeâtre, marque triangulaire rougeâtre avec la base le long de la marge postérieure ; côtés clairs avec une bande oblique brun-foncé rejoignant la marge foncée dorsale; sternites jaune-verdâtre, avec une grande marque triangulaire brun-orangé, plus intense dans sa partie centrale, s’appuyant sur toute la marge postérieure, la pointe touchant la marge antérieure. Deux filaments caudaux bruns, plus clairs vers l’extrémité, aux annulations rougeâtres. Femelle de teinte générale plus rougeâtre, marques abdominales souvent moins prononcées.
Détermination :
L’espèce est peu facile à reconnaître. Peut surtout se distinguer par l’examen des genitalia mâles.
Espèces proches :
Confusion possible avec E. torrentium avec qui elle peut cohabiter, et dont certains spécimens présentent des marques abdominales ressemblantes.
Période d’observation :
Les adultes sont observés de fin-février à fin-août, fréquence plus marquée de mai à juillet, avec un décalage selon l’altitude.
Biologie-éthologie :
Espèce univoltine printanière-estivale. Larves agrippées au substrat minéral (galets, pierres) dans les veines d’eau principales. Vol pendulaire des mâles durant la journée, près des cours d’eau.
Biogéographie et écologie :
Distribuée des Pyrénées à l’Europe centrale, le Caucase, l’Asie Mineure. Espèce assez fréquente dans son milieu d’eau froide des ruisseaux et rivières de colline et montagne, au courant très soutenu, Espèce pouvant tolérer une certaine pollution organique si le débit se main-tient. De 200 (rare) à près de 1700 m d’altitude.

Certain presence
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").
No information
In the state of knowledge, we can not comment on the presence or absence in the current department. This is the default status when not comprised in one of the previous categories or whenever there is doubt.
