Caractères distinctifs, espèces
Taille - femelle : 6-8 mm, mâle : 3-6 mm.
Les pattes antérieures beaucoup plus grandes que les postérieures sont caractéristiques de la famille. Le corps est brun avec une bande médiane plus claire sur le céphalothorax et une autre encerclant le dos de l'abdomen. Il y a presque quarante espèces de Xystiques en France. On peut les distinguer en groupes d'espèces mais l'observation des pièces génitales est indispensable pour identifier les espèces au sein des groupes. Les premiers naturalistes nommant cette araignée voyaient sur son abdomen le dessin d'une crête ou d'un plumeau brun découpé, d'où son nom.
Milieux colonisés
L'espèce colonise beaucoup de milieux où on la trouve au sol ou sur la végétation. Elle manque en forêts excepté en clairière ou en bordure. Elle supporte particulièrement bien la dessiccation et colonise aussi des milieux secs.
Chasse
L'espèce chasse aussi bien au sol, le long des lignes de passages que sur la végétation, en particulier sur les fleurs. Ses proies sont donc très variables, depuis les fourmis, les coléoptères et les araignées, jusqu'aux butineurs. L'espèce pratique avec succès le vol aérostatique pendant une grande partie de son développement, ainsi des immatures de grande taille réussissent à s'envoler sur plusieurs dizaines de mètres au moyen de leur fil d'envol.
Développement, cycle
Les mâles sont présents d'avril à juillet, les femelles d'avril à septembre. Le cycle est annuel mais pourrait être sur deux ans pour certains individus.
Lors de l'accouplement le mâle se déplace autour de la femelle, et l'ancre au sol avec de la soie. La femelle est donc fixée et ne peut capturer le mâle lorsqu'il a fini la fécondation. Lors de la ponte, la femelle tisse un cocon qui englobe souvent de la végétation et constitue une masse de soie très blanche. Elle reste ensuite sur le cocon jusqu'à la sortie des jeunes ou sa mort.

The map presents a summary at the 10 x 10 km grid of the observation data for the species transmitted to the SINP. These data have been subjected to validation filters.
The map presents a reference distribution layer of the species at the scale of departments and marine sectors. The presence and absence data were established by expertise within a network of partners. This reference distribution is used in the validation process of the SINP data at the INPN level.
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
