What is the geological heritage ?

The expression "Geological heritage" considers all objects and sites related to the disciplines of Earth Sciences that present an exceptional interest for the memory of the Earth. All of those objects and sites are to be put back in their natural framework, they can represent one or a number of geological phenomenon. The term: geology is to be taken into in its larger aspect. It includes: paleontology, mineralogy, tectonics, sedimentology...

Moreover, today, not only it is about observing, describing, making an inventory of the different components of the geological heritage but also to try to understand the functioning of the whole system.

The inventory of the geological sites will consist of a hierarchical organization of these sites in terms of heritage-based interest. It would give the possibility to indentify the rarest and the most remarkable sites that need to be proposed for inscription at the national geological heritage.
