Herbacée de 5 à 40 cm.
Diagnose :
Fleurs jaunes regroupées en ombelle par 2-7. Le Lotier commun est une plante assez polymorphe, de la famille des légumineuses (Fabacées). Ses fleurs papilionacées sont jaunes, et portées par des pédoncules plus longs que les feuilles. Le calice à 5 dents en cloche. Les fruits sont des gousses linéaires, un peu épaisses. Les feuilles sont découpées en 3 folioles obovales ou oblongues. Les deux stipules ont la même forme que les folioles. La tige du Lotier commun et pleine ou étroitement creuse à la base, la souche pivotante.
Détermination :
Moyennement difficile.
Espèces proches :
Confusion possible avec le Lotier des fanges : Lotus pedunculatus, dont la tige est creuse et qui présente des stolons souterrains.
Biologie-ethologie :
Floraison de mai à septembre. Espèce de milieux plutôt ouverts : pelouses, prairies, pâturages, bois ouverts, garrigues. Ses fleurs sont hermaphrodites et pollinisées par les insectes. Les gousses sont dispersées par la gravité ou par le vent.
Biogéographique :
Le Lotier commun est courant en Europe, Asie et Afrique septentrionale.
