Plante herbacée de petite taille à rameaux rampants solidement ancrés au sol et émettant 1-2 rameaux verticaux. Le sommet des rameaux verticaux est différencié en un épi sporifère dont les feuilles sont identiques à celles des rameaux végétatifs mais plus étalées et un peu renflées à leur base où se trouvent des sporanges.
Détermination
Simple.
Espèces proches
Les Lycopodium se distingue de Lycopodiella inundata par la présence d’un épi sporifère à feuilles nettement différenciées. Huperzia selago ne possède pas de véritable épi (pas de différenciation) et n’a pas de tige rampantes (épi différencié et tiges rampantes chez L. inundata).
Période d’observation
Sporulation entre juillet et septembre.
Biologie - éthologie
Espèce herbacée vivace appartenant à la petite famille des Lycopodiaceae. Ces Ptéridophytes de lignée très ancienne sont aujourd’hui les dernières représentantes de végétaux vasculaires « primitifs », dont certains ont mesuré plusieurs mètres au Dévonien. Les espèces actuelles sont toutes herbacées et taille souvent modeste. Lycopodiella inundata est une espèce monoïque, hydrogame, et anémochore.
Biogéographie et écologie
Espèce circumboréale : Europe, Amérique du Nord, Sibérie et Japon. Lycopodiella inundata est une plante des tourbières à sphaignes et de landes tourbeuses où elle occupe des milieux pionniers et dénudés soumis à l’immersion périodique.
