Petite plante herbacée annuelle dressée et un peu rameuse, à feuilles alternes lancéolées-aigues. Fleurs roses à 4 pétales plus de deux fois plus longs que larges, à 2-6 étamines. Tube de l’hypanthium (réceptacle floral) moins de 2 fois plus long que large.
Détermination
Délicate.
Espèces proches
Lythrum junceum a des fleurs à 10-14 étamines et des pétales > 4 mm de long (fleurs à 2-6 étamines et pétales <4 mm chez L. thymifolia). L. hyssopifolia et L. tribracteatum ont des fleurs à 6 pétales (L. thymifolia a une majorité de fleurs à 4 pétales). L. thesioides a des pétales et le tube de l’hypanthium fructifères tous moins de deux fois plus longs que larges (les pétages et le tube de l’hypanthium sont plus de 2 fois plus longs que larges chez L. thymifolia).
Période d’observation
Floraison entre mai et juillet.
Biologie - éthologie
Espèce de thérophyte (herbacée annuelle) appartenant à la petite famille des Lythraceae. Les plantes de cette famille ont généralement des fleurs régulières à 4, 5 ou 6 pétales libres et un hypanthium dans lequel sont insérées les étamines. Le genre Lythrum compte 8 espèces en France dont 7 sont annuelles, et toutes sont liées aux milieux au moins temporairement humides. Lythrum thymifolia est une espèce hermaphrodite, entomogame et barochore.
Biogéographie et écologie
Espèce méditerranéenne : Pourtour de la méditerranée, Proche-Orient et Asie centrale. Lythrum thymifolia est une espèce des pelouses des mares temporaires méditerranéenne sur sols pauvres. Espèce très rare en France.
