Cétoine au corps trapu entièrement noir orné de 4 taches jaune ocre sur chaque élytre.
Détermination :
simple.
Période d'observation :
On peut observer les adultes de mai à juillet.
Biologie-éthologie :
La larve se développe dans la carie rouge d'arbres creux divers (aulne, chêne, châtaignier, hêtre et même pin maritime). Les adultes s'observent parfois sur les fleurs de châtaigniers, mais il passe l'essentiel de sa vie dans les cavités.
Biogéographie et écologie :
Cette espèce occupe toute l'Europe jusqu'en Asie Mineure. C'est une espèce rare et dont les populations sont fragmentées sur toute son aire de répartition.
