Taille/poids : Mesure entre 45 et 69 mm. Le corps est annelé de jaune et de noir.Diagnose :Insecte de grande taille, de coloration noire et jaune. Les ailes sont larges et translucides. Sur la tête, front jaune porte un trait noir transversal très marqué le long de la carène supérieure. Anneaux jaunes de l'abdomen peu épais. Détermination :L'espèce est identifiable sur photo.Espèces proches :Confusion possible avec Cordulegaster boltonii immaculifrons, Cordulegaster bidentata et Macromia splendens.Périodes d'observation :Les adultes sont visibles de juin à octobre.Biologie – éthologie :Cordulegaster boltonii boltonii affectionne les ruisseaux à fonds sableux des zones collinéennes et montagnardes. Il se rencontre aussi au niveau des grandes rivières. Des adultes en chasse peuvent être visibles en lisière de forêt ou d'ourlet arbustif. Les mâles patrouillent longuement les secteurs ombragés à la recherche de femelles pouvant y pondre. Ils sont rarement territoriaux, uniquement en cas de grande population. Les femelles restent souvent cachées dans la végétation et sont rarement observées.Biogéographie et écologie :Cordulegaster boltonii boltonii est bien répandue en France, jusqu'à 2000 m d'altitude ; moins dans la pointe sud-est. La phase larvaire (entre 12 et 14 stades) dure 2 à 3 ans dans le bassin méditerranéen ; 4 à 5 ans dans le reste du territoire.Bibliographie :
