Diagnose :
La Bergeronnette grise est un passereau à silhouette élancée, remarquable par sa longue queue noire bordée de blanc qu'elle agite perpétuellement. Le mâle présente des joues et un front blancs encadrés par une calotte et un plastron noirs. Le dos est gris argenté chez la sous-espèce la plus couramment rencontrée.
Détermination :
Simple. Facile sur photo.
Espèces proches :
La Bergeronnette des ruisseaux Motacilla cinerea parfois difficile à distinguer en vol à distance, présente une queue plus longue, une silhouette plus fine et, en tout plumage, du jaune vif au croupion. La Bergeronnette printanière Motacilla flava ne prête à confusion qu'en plumage juvénile ou femelle, mais la silhouette est plus ramassée, la queue plus courte, et les parties supérieures sont franchement brunâtres.
Période d'observation :
Dans certaines régions l'espèce est présente de mars à novembre, dans d'autres elle peut être observée toute l'année.
Biologie-éthologie :
L'alimentation se compose de petits insectes que la Bergeronnette grise capture aussi bien au sol qu'en vol. Elle consomme aussi des graines et des végétaux qu'elle picore principalement en hiver.
Biogéographie et écologie :
Son aire de répartition s'étend d'un bout à l'autre du Paléarctique. La nidification n'est que ponctuelle en Afrique (Maroc) mais certains individus y passent l'hiver, les populations européennes étant migratrices partielles. En toute période, la Bergeronnette grise recherche les milieux dégagés à végétation rase : campagne, bords des cours d'eau, des canaux et des étangs. Elle s'installe aussi dans des milieux secs et s'accommode des modifications du paysage : carrières, remblais, agglomérations.
