Taille/poids :
Longueur totale : 21 à 24 cm. Poids : entre 59 et 65 g.
Diagnose :
Oiseau de taille moyenne, un peu plus petit qu'un Merle noir. La tête présente un très net sourcil blanc crème. Ce caractère la distingue de toutes les autres espèces de grives présentes régulièrement en France. Les couvertures sous alaires et les flancs sont d'un roux tirant sur le rouge. La poitrine crème blanchâtre est marquée de stries noires plus ou moins diffuses.

Simple. Facile sur photo.
Espèces proches :
En France, une seule espèce commune se rapproche de la Grive mauvis, la Grive musicienne Turdus philomelos. La Grive mauvis s'en distingue par sa taille légèrement plus petite, ses nets sourcils clairs (il n'y a pas de sourcils chez la Grive musicienne), ses flancs roux, sa poitrine striée (tachetée chez la musicienne) et son cri de vol très différent.
Période d'observation :
Septembre à avril.
Biologie-éthologie :
En hivernage elle consomme avant tout des fruits et des graines, depuis les baies de genévriers aux pommes en passant par le raisin resté sur les ceps. En région méditerranéenne, elle consomme des olives. Si les températures ne sont pas trop basses, elle se nourrit aussi d'invertébrés, notamment ceux qu'elle trouve sous les litières de feuilles mortes dans les sous bois.
Biogéographie et écologie :
La Grive mauvis est une espèce nordique dont l'aire de répartition s'étend de l'Islande et de la Norvège à l'Extrême-Orient russe à travers les étendues de taïga. Plus au sud elle niche dans les pays baltes, en Pologne et Biélorussie et plus localement en Allemagne, République tchèque et Slovaquie. La Grive mauvis est une migratrice et une hivernante commune en France.
