Diagnose
Longueur 4,5-14 mm.
Tégument testacé recouvert d’assez longues soies blanchâtres, plus fournies sur les élytres. Tête à fine ponctuation chagrinée. Front surélevé, avec une protubérance latérale postérieure formant épine. Pronotum bombé sur les côtés, le sillon basal profond et strié latéralement. Élytres à ponctuation grossière et alignée ; chacun avec deux fines côtes (parfois indistinctes) atteignant presque la base de la déclivité.
Facilité d'identification : simple
Confusions possibles : Pas d'espèce ressemblante dans les Antilles françaises
Répartition générale
Très vaste répartition ; l’espèce se trouve de la Floride jusqu’aux Guyanes, et aux Antilles. Également signalée de Tahiti et des îles Marquises, en
Polynésie, Hawaï et Philippines. C’est un taxon anthropophile, introduit dans la majeure partie de son aire de répartition actuelle avec le commerce du bois.
Signalée de pratiquement toutes les îles des Petites Antilles.
Habitat et biologie
Espèce très commune dans les forêts xérophiles à méso-xérophiles, surtout sur le littoral, y compris sur les îlets, en mangrove et dans les faciès de forêt très dégradés. Espèce nocturne, polyphage, qui se développe notamment dans des bois très durs. Développement observé dans « palétuvier gris » (Conocarpus erecta), « bois gli-gli » (Bucida buceras), « campêche » (Haematoxylon campechianum), «
savonnette » (Lonchocarpus punctatus), « merisier » (Eugenia sp.), «
raisinier bord-de-mer » (Coccoloba uvifera), « monval » (Leucaena
leucocephala), et « bois d’Inde » (Pimenta racemosa).
