Oiseau de taille moyenne, de coloration générale brun noirâtre, densément et très finement barré et vermiculé de gris pâle, de façon plus nette sur les ailes et la queue. Grands yeux à l'iris jaune orangé, bec très court entouré de plumes très fines et longues rappelant les vibrisses d'un félin, pattes assez longues de couleur sombre. La queue est longue et légèrement arrondie, les ailes sont relativement courtes et arrondies.
Détermination
Difficile en raison des mœurs crépusculaires de l'espèce.
Espèces proches
Cet oiseau est très caractéristique. Cependant s'il est observé, les probabilités sont fortes pour que ce soit en vol et à la tombée de la nuit, c'est-à-dire dans de mauvaises conditions d'observation ne permettant que difficilement une identification certaine. Le meilleur moyen pour tenter de retrouver cette espèce pourrait être de l'écoute de cris nocturnes, et de prêter attention aux oiseaux victimes du trafic routier.

Biologie et éthologie
Prédateur de petits animaux, qu'il repère depuis un perchoir ou directement posé au sol. Par rapport aux autres espèces connues, l'Égothèle calédonien est grand et possède de longues pattes, ce qui indique possiblement des mœurs plus terrestres.
Biogéographie et écologie
Espèce endémique de Nouvelle-Calédonie, connue d'un spécimen collecté en 1880 à Païta, dans la région de Nouméa, d'un deuxième spécimen collecté en 1915 de localité inconnue et de quatre observations pour partie incertaines. Elle fréquente des milieux boisés variés (savanes à niaoulis et forêts humides). L'Égothèle calédonien est un oiseau très méconnu, dont la population est supposée très réduite voire éteinte à l'heure actuelle.
