Variable, de 3 à 6(10) cm de long pour 3 mm de largeur au maximum pour la ramification la plus large.
Diagnose :
Thalle fruticuleux, touffu, plus ou moins pendant de couleur gris-vert à vert-jaunâtre, attaché au support par un crampon unique. Généralement subdivisé en de nombreuses branches aplaties ou occasionnellement légèrement concaves. La surface des ramifications est lisse et plus ou moins brillante, leur marge est généralement ponctuée de soralies nombreuses de forme circulaire à ellipsoïde.
Les apothécies sont rares, elles peuvent atteindre 3 mm de diamètre.
Facilité d'identification : simple
Confusions possibles :
Se distingue d'Evernia prunastri (L.) Ach par l'absence d'une face blanche (présente à la face inférieure chez E. prunastri à cause de l'absence de photobionte) et par un port général plus fin.
Répartition générale:
Large répartition dans la zone tempérée de l'hémisphère nord, jusque dans le domaine boréal. Mentions douteuses dans l'hémisphère sud (Amérique du sud, Australie).
Habitat et biologie:
Espèce surtout corticole (pas de restriction concernant l'espèce du support), rarement saxicole et occasionnellement sur sable.
