Arbrisseaux ou petit arbuste rendu blanchâtre et d’aspect velouté dans toutes ses parties par la présence de nombreux poils étoilés. Les feuilles de forme arrondie à palmatilobée portent des lobes plus prononcés vers le sommet de la tige. Les fleurs sont solitaires ou plus rarement par paires et portent un épicalice à 3 lobes larges et soudés sur leur tier basal au maximum. Les 5 pétales sont rose-pâles, sauf l’onglet qui est teinté d’un violet sombre, et sont émarginés au sommet. La colonne staminale est souvent légèrement pendante.
Détermination
Simple.
Espèces proches
Aucune autre espèce ligneuse du genre Malva ne possède un aspect blanchâtre et velouté prononcé. Althaea officinalis aborde aussi une teinte veloutée-blanchâtre mais c’est une plante herbacée, à feuilles supérieures plutôt triangulaires-losangiques, à fleurs plus petites à onglet de même couleur que le reste du pétale.
Période d’observation
Floraison entre février et mai.
Biologie - éthologie
Espèce de chaméphyte (ligneuse de petite taille), appartenant à la famille des Malvaceae, facilement reconnaissable à ses fleurs à 5 pétales de type « mauve » ou « rose trémière » et à son calice doublé d’un épicalice de forme variable. Malva subovata est une espèce hermaphrodite et entomogame.
Biogéographie et écologie
Espèce ouest-méditerranéenne : des côtes Italiennes jusqu’au sud du Portugal, du Maroc à la Tunisie et dispersée sur les îles méditerranéennes. Malva subovata affectionne les falaises soumises aux embruns de la côte méditerranéenne.
