Diagnose : Les mâles de G. claviger sont facilement reconnaissables à leur coloration brun orangée, à leur corne céphalique fine et allongée, et à leur corne thoracique fortement pubescente et terminée par une dilatation excavée et tridentée. Les femelles se distinguent par leur coloration noire et l'absence de cornes sur la tête et le pronotum.
Détermination : Facile, une photo suffit.
Espèces proches : Les femelles sont parfois confondues avec celles de Heterogomphus coriaceus Prell. Pour les distinguer, on peut observer la couleur de la face sternale qui est brun-orangé chez clavigera et noire chez coriaceus, les mandibules qui portent 2 dents égales chez coriaceus et 2 dents fortement inégales chez clavigera, ou les tibias antérieurs qui sont courts chez coriaceus et plus allongés et arqués chez clavigera.
Période d'observation : Toute l'année mais plus abondant de mai à juillet.
Biologie-éthologie : Biologie inconnue.
Biogéographie et écologie : Espèce connue de Colombie, d'Equateur, du Pérou et du Vénézuela.
