Taille / poids :Longueur totale : 28 cm. Poids : 70 g.
Diagnose :Passereau de taille moyenne, entièrement gris foncé avec les sous caudales et le dessous de l'aile roux. Mâles et femelles sont semblables, mais la femelle est plus terne.
Détermination :Cette espèce est relativement simple à reconnaître.
Espèces proches :L'Échenilleur de montagne a une silhouette proche de Coracina caledonica caledonica, mais ce dernier est nettement plus grand et plus sombre.
Période d'observation :Cette espèce peut être observée toute l'année.
Biologie et éthologie :L'Échenilleur de montagne est généralement observé seul et est peu commun. Il se déplace dans la canopée où il se nourrit essentiellement de gros insectes, parfois de baies. La reproduction a lieu de septembre à janvier, le nid est une coupe placée haut et des pontes de un œuf seulement sont rapportées. Le chant typique est composé de deux cris stridents, le premier plus aigu, puis d'une courte phrase similaire.
Biogéographie et écologie :Cette espèce est endémique de la Grande Terre et de l'Île des Pins en Nouvelle-Calédonie. Elle fréquente les forêts humides et les forêts littorales du bord de mer jusqu'à plus de 1000 m d'altitude.
