Diagnose :
Le Pâturin commun est une espèce de la famille des Poacées (anciennement appelée Graminées), herbacée, vivace, à racines fibreuses et tiges pouvant atteindre 1 m de hauteur, disposées en touffes plus ou moins denses. Les feuilles sont alternes, planes, étroites et linéaires. Les ligules mesurent jusqu'à 5 mm de longueur. Les fleurs sont disposées en une large panicule d'épillets. Ces épillets comprennent de deux à quatre fleurs, chacune à deux glumelles, et l'ensemble est entouré par deux glumes. Les fleurs, en elles-mêmes, ne possèdent ni sépales ni pétales, ont trois étamines à long filet et deux styles blanchâtres plumeux. La floraison se déroule de début du printemps au début de l'été. Le fruit est un akène de type particulier, appelé par le terme de caryopse.
Détermination :
Le Pâturin commun est délicat à déterminer, compte tenu qu'il existe de nombreuses espèces de morphologiquement très proches, entre autres le Pâturin des prés (Poa pratensis L.), dont les feuilles possèdent une ligule ne dépassant guère 2 mm.
Biogéographique et écologie :
En France métropolitaine, cette espèce est commune dans toutes les régions. Il se rencontre dans les milieux rudéraux, les friches, les bords de chemins, ainsi que les prairies et pâtures.
