Taille - femelle : 5-7 mm, mâle : 4-5 mm.
L’espèce est assez typique, avec de grandes pattes fines et un abdomen globuleux de teinte jaune ou blanche, parfois marqué de bandes longitudinales rouges. Il y a treize espèces d’Enoplognatha répertoriées en France, mais plusieurs sont très sombres, le groupe d’E. ovata comprend quelques espèces claires (E. afrodite, E. latimana) qui ne se distinguent que par l’observation des pièces génitales.
Milieux colonisés
L’espèce colonise la végétation basse ou arbustive de divers milieux : prairies, landes, sous-bois, ainsi que les jardins.
Chasse
L’espèce tisse une toile sommaire à partir de la végétation herbacée ou arbustive. L’araignée se tient à proximité, sous une feuille enroulée ou sous une fleur. La toile est consolidée la nuit. Elle capture beaucoup d’insectes ailés notamment des diptères mais son venin est suffisamment actif pour paralyser des coléoptères de taille moyenne (ex. : doryphores).
Développement, cycle
Les adultes sont présents dès juin, pour les mâles jusqu’en juillet-août, pour les femelles jusqu’en octobre. Elle pourrait boucler deux cycles annuels au Sud de la France avec un cycle d’hiver de l’automne au printemps. Le cycle est annuel en Europe du Nord.
Le mâle adulte vit avec une femelle immature qu’il féconde dès qu’elle a effectué sa dernière mue alors que son tégument est encore mou. Pour la ponte, la femelle s'enferme dans une loge formée de feuilles ou d'herbes qu'elle lie avec de la soie. Il peut y avoir plusieurs pontes, la première abondante dépassant souvent 100 à 150 œufs, la seconde de quelques dizaines d’œufs. Les cocons sont recouverts d’une épaisse soie souvent bleutée formant une masse plus grande que la femelle. Elle reste avec sa ponte jusqu’à ce que les jeunes se dispersent ou qu’elle meure.

The map presents a reference distribution layer of the species at the scale of departments and marine sectors. The presence and absence data were established by expertise within a network of partners. This reference distribution is used in the validation process of the SINP data at the INPN level.
