D'une taille légèrement supérieure à Trichoniscus pusillus s.l., Hyloniscus riparius s'en distingue par un unique ocelle noire et une pléon dont les premiers segments sont teintés de jaune. Contrairement à Oritoniscus flavus auquel il peut ressembler (un seul ommatidie également mais coloration différente) ses pigments restent stables dans l'alcool.
Détermination :
La détermination de l'espèce peut se faire à vue, en observant les caractères énoncés ci-dessous. La confirmation de la détermination, sur des exemplaires mâles est aisée en observant le péréiopode 7, dont la base du méros porte un crochet saillant bien développé.

Biogéographie et écologie :
Espèce originaire d'Europe centrale, H. riparius est expansive et poursuit sa colonisation tant vers l'ouest que vers l'est où elle atteint la Russie. Elle est également introduite en Amérique du Nord. Adaptée aux plaines alluviales et à la submersion lors des crues, elle s'étend en suivant les cours d'eau. elle fréquente dans les ripisylves, tourbières boisées et marais.

This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
