Taille/poids :Peut atteindre 60 cm, mais généralement inférieur à 40 cm.Diagnose :Forme plus ou moins cubique mais à angles arrondis. Yeux gros et globuleux, front abrupt et bouche à lèvres charnues. Nageoires dorsale et anales très en arrière. Coloration de fond beige à orange pâle. Des épines sur tout le corps ainsi que des petites taches noires, ces dernières absentes des nageoires. De grandes plaques brun sombre barrent les yeux et le corps.Détermination : Simple. Espèces proches : Si la détermination de cette espèce est simple en apparence, il faut garder l'esprit attentif, et bien valider les critères qui la différencie du plus rare Chilimycterus antennatus : chez ce dernier, les plaques sombres sont bordées de blanc, et les épines plus petites et toujours dressées. Quant à Chilomycterus reticulatus, il possède des points noirs sur sa nageoire dorsale.Période d'observation : Toute l'année.Biologie-éthologie : Espèce mauvaise nageuse qui se défend en se gonflant rapidement, le faisant ressembler à un ballon épineux. Carnivore nocturne, il recherche crustacés et mollusques que ses puissantes mâchoires broient. Biogéographie et écologie :Espèce circumtropicale : Atlantique Est et Ouest (toutes les Caraïbes mais plus localisé dans le Golfe du Mexique), Océan indien et Pacifique jusqu'au niveau des îles centrales. Côtes asiatiques et australiennes. Poisson ubiquiste (et commun dans les Antilles françaises), que l'on retrouve aussi bien dans les herbiers, les récifs voire moins fréquemment dans les mangroves. Évite les secteurs agités.
