Très proche de S. fusca au niveau de la coloration, du comportement et de la biologie, sa répartition est décalée vers le nord-est. Il se différencie par ses cerques, n'atteignant pas la dent basale interne des cercoïdes et par sa bande brun foncé supérieure du thorax, marquée d'un élargissement important sur son bord inférieur.
Cette espèce a une vaste répartition au nord de l'Eurasie qui s'étend jusqu'au Japon. Elle est cependant très localisée et menacée à l'ouest. En France, il existe seulement 2 anciennes citations des environs de Nice et de la vallée de l'Isère.
S. paedisca se reproduit dans tous les types d'eau stagnante : mares des tourbières à sphaignes et des marais oligotrophes et mésotrophes, même temporaires mais en eau de mai à août, étangs et lacs ceinturés de cariçaies ou de roselières inondées, jusqu'à 600 m d'altitude.
Les adultes émergent fin juillet, puis hibernent pour pondre en avril-mai.

The map presents a summary at the 10 x 10 km grid of the observation data for the species transmitted to the SINP. These data have been subjected to validation filters.
The map presents a reference distribution layer of the species at the scale of departments and marine sectors. The presence and absence data were established by expertise within a network of partners. This reference distribution is used in the validation process of the SINP data at the INPN level.
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
