Cette espèce peut atteindre une taille maximale de deux mètres dans son milieu d’origine, pour un poids atteignant 100 kg.
Diagnose :
L’Esturgeon sibérien possède, comme tout esturgeon, une nageoire caudale hétérocerque, cinq rangées d’écussons osseux le long du corps, quatre barbillons en ligne transversale antérieure à la bouche et un rostre moyennement allongé. Il est caractérisé par un museau long et fin, quatre barbillons longs non frangés, 32 à 59 écussons latéraux gris.
Détermination et espèces proches:
L’identification de l’espèce est simple. Néanmoins elle peut être confondue avec les deux autres espèces d’esturgeon si l’on n’observe pas certains caractères. Elle se distingue de l’esturgeon européen Acipenser sturio Linnaeus, 1758 par un museau long et fin (vs. court et arrondi), quatre barbillons longs (vs. courts), 32 à 59 écussons latéraux (vs. 29 à 38) et elle se différencie de l’esturgeon du Danube Acipenser rutheneus Linnaeus, 1758 par des barbillons non frangés (vs. frangés), 32 à 59 écussons latéraux gris (vs. 57 à 71 blancs).
Période d’observation :
L’Esturgeon sibérien est observable toute l’année.
Biologie-éthologie :
Cet esturgeon est essentiellement dulçaquicole.La maturité sexuelle dans le milieu naturel peut être atteinte pour les mâles vers 9-11 ans (pour une taille de 75-85 cm) et un peu plus tard pour les femelles. Les géniteurs migrent au printemps vers l’amont pour frayer dans des zones relativement profondes avec un courant vif et un fond rocheux. Les œufs de mesurent entre 2,4 à 2,9 mm de diamètre et adhèrent au substrat. Son alimentation se compose d’invertébrés benthiques.
Biogéographie et écologie :
L’Esturgeon sibérien est naturellement présent dans les fleuves sibériens, de l’Ob à la Kolyma ainsi que dans les lacs Baïkal et Zaïsan. Elle a été introduite en France dans plusieurs piscicultures à la fin des années 80 à des fins scientifiques.Cette espèce est menacée sur la liste rouge mondiale de l'IUCN.
Interactions avec les activités humaines :
Cette espèce a un fort intérêt commercial pour les pêcheries et l’aquaculture, et également pour les aquariums publics.

For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").
