Diagnose :
Arbrisseau de 1 à 5 m. Le noisetier est un arbrisseau à écorce brun-grisâtre caractérisée par son aspect luisant. Il appartient à la même famille que le Bouleau, le Charme et les Aulnes : la famille des Betulaceae. L'espèce est monoïque, on voit apparaître les fleurs mâles, bien avant les feuilles. Les chatons mâles sont jaunes et pendants, groupés par 1 à 5, et longs de 3 à 12cm. Les fleurs femelles, regroupées par 1 à 5 également, laissent apparaître à l'épanouissement, un bouquet de styles de couleur rouge carmin, à l'extrémité d'un genre de bourgeon cotonneux. Les feuilles, à courts pétioles, sont entières et doublement dentées. Leur limbe est agréable au toucher et poilu. Enfin les fruits, des akènes, possèdent un péricarpe ligneux, que l'on se plait à casser pour en manger la graine, plus connue sous le nom de noisette. Ses fleurs sont donc monoïques, les mâles séparés des femelles et s'épanouissant de façon légèrement décalée. La pollinisation est assurée par le vent, mais aussi par les insectes. Les graines, disséminées par les animaux (dyszoochorie), en particulier l'écureuil, qui oublie parfois où il a enfouie certaines de ses réserves hivernales, permettant ainsi à certaines noisettes de germer. L'arbuste rejette de souche, présentant ainsi un aspect buissonnant caractéristique.

Attention cependant à ne pas le confondre avec Corylus colurna, espèce ornementale souvent plantée dans les villes, dont les fruits sont plus petits, et l'involucre dont les bractées sont plus filiformes.
Biologie-ethologie :
Floraison de décembre à mai sous climat méditerranéen, de janvier à mars dans le reste du pays. Fructification en septembre, octobre.
Biogéographique et écologie :
Espèce de haies, fruticée, bois frais, broussailles en montagne et ripisylve ou vallons encaissés en région méditerranéenne. L'espèce est parfois cultivée. Cette espèce est présente principalement sur les continents européen et asiatique.
