Taille/poids : Mesure entre 43 et 88 mm, le mâle est plus petit et plus grêle que la femelle. La plus grande mante en France, est répartie quasiment sur tout l'hexagone.Diagnose :Insecte de grande taille, de coloration très variable selon les individus, de beige clair à brun foncé, en passant par le vert. Les pattes ravisseuses antérieures sont très bien visibles. Les ailes sont développées pour le vol uniquement chez les mâles. Les femelles ont les ailes un peu plus courtes, elles atteignent à peine l'extrémité de l'abdomen. Le pronotum n'a pas de caractéristiques particulières. Les hanches des pattes antérieures possèdent une macule noire contenant ou non une tache ronde blanche. L'abdomen de la femelle est fusiforme, assez renflé, surtout peu de temps avant de pondre l'oothèque contenant les œufs.Détermination :L'espèce est identifiable à partir d'une photo. Il faut bien regarder les ailes postérieures et l'intérieur des hanches pattes antérieures, ravisseuses.Espèces proches :Confusion possible avec Iris oratoria mais qui est plus petite, brachyptère chez la femelle. De plus, les ailes de cette dernière montrent un pattern de couleurs caractéristique de l'espèce.Périodes d'observation :Les adultes sont visibles de juillet à novembre. Biologie – éthologie :Mantis religiosa est observable dans la végétation herbacée, du sol à la strate arbustive ; plus particulièrement dans cette dernière à l'état adulte. Les jeunes sont plus souvent visibles à hauteur de l'herbe. Les mâles s'envolent sur quelques mètres suite à un dérangement. La ponte a lieu au cours de l'été, de juillet à septembre. L'espèce passe l'hiver sous forme d'œufs dans une oothèque accrochée à un support. Les jeunes au printemps sont très difficilement observables car très petits.Biogéographie et écologie :Espèce méditerranéenne, sa répartition en France ne se limite pas au Midi méditerranéen, elle est observable jusqu'au nord de la Normandie et de l'Ile-de-France ; entre 0 et 1200 m d'altitude (surtout au-dessous de 700 m). On les retrouve sur le sol, dans les herbes jusque dans les petits arbustes des milieux chauds.Bibliographie :

The map presents a summary at the 10 x 10 km grid of the observation data for the species transmitted to the SINP. These data have been subjected to validation filters.
The map presents a reference distribution layer of the species at the scale of departments and marine sectors. The presence and absence data were established by expertise within a network of partners. This reference distribution is used in the validation process of the SINP data at the INPN level.
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
