Cette espèce est couleur sable. Il atteint 18 mm (femelle) à 25 mm (mâle). Vue de face, elle semble loucher. Les antennes sont orangées et bien développées chez le mâle chez qui elles atteignent presque la longueur du corps. Le telson est près de deux fois plus large que long. La différenciation sexuelle intervient vers 8,5 mm de longueur.
Détermination et espèces proches.
L'identification de l'espèce est moyennement difficile, plusieurs espèces pouvant se rencontrer dans le même habitat.
Période d'observation.
Les adultes s'observent toute l'année (plus difficilement en hiver).
Biologie-éthologie.
La femelle pond en été 10 à 23 œufs et les incube 8 à 20 jours. La longévité est de 1 à 2 ans ; il y a 1 ou 2 générations par an. Cette espèce se tient dans le sable humide le jour ; elle utilise la lumière pour s'orienter et le déplacement se fait la nuit par bonds. Son alimentation est à base d'algues et d'organismes en décomposition. Ses prédateurs sont des poissons, des oiseaux et des coléoptères. Il est parasité par une grégarine.
Écologie et distribution.L'espèce se rencontre sur le sable fin du haut des plages où elle joue un rôle écologique important en contribuant à l'aération du sable. On la trouve en Atlantique de la Norvège à la Macaronésie, la Méditerranée et la Mer Noire.
Interactions avec les activités humaines.
Étant sensible aux pollutions marines, l'espèce est un indicatrice de la qualité de l'eau. En été, elle est affectée par la fréquentation touristique des plages.

Current distribution in metropolitan France

Certain presence
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").

In the state of knowledge, we can not comment on the presence or absence in the current department. This is the default status when not comprised in one of the previous categories or whenever there is doubt.
