Ténébrion au corps allongé, parallèle, au pronotum non transverse et à ponctuation irrégulière sur les élytres, de couleur brun sombre à pattes rouge ferrugineux.

Les adultes sont actifs de mai à octobre.
Biologie-éthologie :
Bius thoracicus est l'hôte des chandelles de résineux dans des contextes de vieilles forêts matures. Il se prend le plus souvent par exemplaires isolés, surtout au printemps et à l'automne, sous les écorces déhiscentes des arbres morts sur pied en général bien exposés, au milieu des débris assez secs issus de l'activité des xylophages pionniers et autres insectes foreurs. Sa larve détritiphage vit aux dépens des exuvies, cadavres d'insectes et autres restes d'origines variées qui forment avec de la sciure des accumulations sous les écorces et les fissures de carie blanche sèche et pulvérulente.
Biogéographie et écologie :
Espèce boréo-alpine ayant une assez large répartition en Europe moyenne et septentrionale. Très rare et très localisé.

Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
