La couleur de fond des ailes est uniformément grise avec une teinte légèrement brunâtre ; franges bicolores et délimitées par une ligne noire. Recto de l'aile antérieure découpé par un réseau de lignes transversales marquées et épaissies près de la côte ; lignes post-basale et submarginale triples, fortement dentées avec un espace interne éclairci ; ligne discale double qui coupe la tache discale oblongue et légèrement incurvée ; aire marginale entrecoupée par des traits noirs qui surlignent les nervures. Dessus de l'aile postérieure lignée même si ces dernières sont assez effacées ; ligne submarginale triple, dentée avec un espace interne éclairci ; aire marginale entrecoupée par de légers traits noirs qui surlignent les nervures ; tache discale ovale.
Détermination :
L'adulte est difficile à identifier.
Espèces proches :
En France métropolitaine, elle peut être confondue avec une autre espèce Eupithecia venosata (Eupithécie veinée) et dans une moindre mesure avec Eupithecia silenicolata (Eupithécie silénicole). Les différences alaires sont ténues et demandent un bon niveau d'expertise et le plus souvent la détermination passe par l'observation des pièces génitales.
Période d’observation :
Les adultes s'observent de mi-avril à juillet.
Biologie-éthologie :
L'Eupithécie de Schiefer a une génération par an. Les adultes ont une activité nocturne. Oligophage, la chenille se développe dans les fleurs de Silene otites, S. nutans et Saponaria ocymoides. C'est au stade de chrysalide, dans un cocon lâche confectionné dans la litière, que l'espèce hiverne.
Biogéographique et écologie :
Holo-méditerranéen, ce papillon est présent dans la majorité des pays du pourtour méditerranéen et ses îles, jusqu'à la région de la mer Caspienne à travers l'Asie Mineure et le Caucase. On notera la présence de quelques populations en Europe centrale : Suisse, Autriche, Slovaquie, Roumanie. L'Eupithécie de Schiefer privilégie les pelouses rases écorchées et steppiques ainsi que les lisières xérothermophiles. Elle s'observe de l'étage collinéen à subalpin, sa limite altitudinale étant vers 2000 mètres dans les Alpes.

Certain presence
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").

In the state of knowledge, we can not comment on the presence or absence in the current department. This is the default status when not comprised in one of the previous categories or whenever there is doubt.
