Fond de l'aile antérieure brun-gris avec un liseré brun à la base des franges ; ligne basale peu visible ; ligne post-basale sinueuse formant deux demi-cercles ; ligne post-discale oblique, rectiligne et coudée à angle droit près de la côte, bordée extérieurement par une plage claire ; aire médiane interligne sombre ; ligne marginale claire dentée ; orbiculaire faiblement délimitée qui tend à se confondre avec la teinte de la côte ; réniforme visible délimitée par un liseré ; nervures surlignées d'écailles brunes et blanchâtres. Aile postérieure de couleur brun-jaunâtre avec les nervures surlignées d'écailles sombres ; ligne post-discale à peine visible.
Détermination :
L'adulte, bien que caractéristique, demande un examen attentif.
Espèces proches :
En France métropolitaine, l'espèce ressemble à Hydraecia micacea (Noctuelle de la Pomme de Terre). Néanmoins cette dernière a une plus petite envergure 28-40 mm. De plus le fond de l'aile est brun-cuivré alors que pour Hydraecia petasitis il est brun-gris.
Période d’observation :
Les adultes s'observent de mi-juillet à fin septembre.
Biologie-éthologie :
Cette espèce a une génération par an. L'adulte est actif de nuit. La chenille, monophage et endophyte, se nourrit d'avril à début juillet dans la tige, puis dans les racines de Petasites hybridus. Les oeufs passent l’hiver fixés sur la tige de la plante hôte.
Biogéographique et écologie :
Eurasiatique, son aire de répartition s'étire de l'est de la France à la Grande-Bretagne puis à travers le nord de l'Italie, le centre et le nord de l'Europe jusqu’à la Sibérie méridionale. Hygrophile, elle s'observe dans les milieux forestiers, les clairières et les ripisylves, généralement à proximité des cours d'eau et des tourbières. L'espèce est présente de l'étage collinéen à montagnard.

Current distribution in metropolitan France

Certain presence
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").

In the state of knowledge, we can not comment on the presence or absence in the current department. This is the default status when not comprised in one of the previous categories or whenever there is doubt.
