Imago mâle avec la tête et thorax brun-foncé. Yeux composés en turban avec la tige constituée d’une base olive, surmontée d’un fin anneau brun, puis d’un anneau gris-jaune, d’un large anneau jaune-orangé, la face supérieure étant brun-rouge et finement cerclée de brun-foncé. Pattes grises, les fémurs antérieurs et les tarses nettement brunâtres. Ailes antérieures transparentes, hyalines, aire ptérygostigmatique légèrement teintée de gris-pâle. Petites ailes postérieures assez larges, à trois nervures longitudinales, la troisième presque confondue avec la marge de l’aile ; processus costal bien marqué. Abdomen avec le tergite I brun foncé, les tergites II à VI généralement translucides, blanchâtres, et VII-X brun-jaune. Deux longs filaments caudaux gris-blanchâtres.
Détermination :
L’espèce est assez difficile à reconnaître et nécessite l’examen attentif des genitalia mâles à la loupe binoculaire.
Espèces proches :
Confusion possible avec d’autres espèces du genre Baetis, notamment B. fuscatus dont les genitalia mâles ont une structure assez voisine.
Période d’observation :
Les adultes des diverses cohortes sont observés de fin-avril à mi-septembre, les émergences estivales (juillet-août) étant nettement les plus fréquentes.
Biologie-éthologie :
Espèce généralement univoltine, une seconde génération estivale (plus dense en individus) étant fréquente à basse altitude. Larves aquatiques se déplaçant rapidement en nageant sou-vent dans la végétation aquatique. Accouplement en vol, les mâles constituant des essaims avec vol pendulaire sur la rive. Les œufs sont déposés sous la surface de l’eau, la femelle s’immergeant plus ou moins complètement en descendant le long d’un support émergé (grosse pierre, bloc, tige ou racine de la végétation rivulaire…).
Biogéographie et écologie :
Ouest Paléarctique de la Péninsule Ibérique à la Scandinavie, l’Europe centrale et méridionale, la Turquie. Espèce moyennement tolérante à la pollution organique, commune dans divers types de cours d’eau de plaine et de collines dans les secteurs à courant modéré, souvent à la frontière de la veine d’eau principale, sur substrat minéral même un peu colmaté. Jusqu’à près de 1100 m d’altitude (exceptionnelle à plus haute altitude, dans des ruisseaux bien exposés).

The map presents a reference distribution layer of the species at the scale of departments and marine sectors. The presence and absence data were established by expertise within a network of partners. This reference distribution is used in the validation process of the SINP data at the INPN level.

Certain presence
Corresponds to a report on the basis of at least one observation proved within a period of 10 years (20 years for little-known invertebrates) preceding the year and no presumption of extinction since obtaining the last data nor doubt on reproductive and implemented nature of this population. For migratory species, the presence indicated concerns areas of reproduction.
Probable presence
This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
search of species incomplete but presence of supportive environments;
ecology of the species consistent with the hypothesis of his presence;
the last reliable sighting is older than 10 years compared to the reference date, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [vertebrates, invertebrates and plants well studied (rhopalocera, grasshoppers, dragonflies ...)] ;
the last reliable observation being older than 20 years, no recent specific research and no presumption of extinction from that date [poorly known taxa: fungus, many invertebrates...].
Probable or certain absence
This point covers the absence, more difficult by nature to demonstrate than presence. This status is based on one or more of the following criteria:
intensive but unsuccessful targeted research;
lack of adequate environments;
unobserved species while its presence is easily detected;
unlikely presence for historical or biogeographical reasons.
This status must be assigned to a department in which the presence of the species is casual.
Absence due to a proven extinction
Particular case of absence due to a proven extinction less than a half century ago (older disappearances are treated as "no probable or definite").
No information
In the state of knowledge, we can not comment on the presence or absence in the current department. This is the default status when not comprised in one of the previous categories or whenever there is doubt.
