Longueur : 20 cm environ (mâles et femelles sensiblement identiques), envergure : 49 à 54 cm, poids : 77 à 105 g pour les mâles et 90 à 119 g pour les femelles.
Le Petit-duc scops possède un plumage couleur d'écorce avec une forme brune et une forme grise. Le plumage est parsemé de stries sombres finement barrées. Les aigrettes sont relativement courtes et donc peu visibles. L'iris des yeux est jaune citron. Le bec est couleur corne tirant vers le gris. Les doigts sont nus, les griffes acérées étroites et généralement brun-noir. En vol, le Petit-duc scops est rapide, preste et rectiligne. Les ailes sont longues et la queue est courte.
Le Petit-duc scops passe la journée immobile contre un tronc. Son activité est strictement nocturne mais comporte deux phases : un pic le soir en fin de période crépusculaire et un autre le matin avant l'aube, avec une phase de repos commençant après minuit. En période nuptiale l'activité s'étend sur toute la nuit et en période de nourrissage des jeunes, le Petit-duc peut s'activer dès la fin du jour.
Le Petit-duc scops se nourrit essentiellement d'invertébrés (sauterelles, grillons, cigales, papillons de nuit, criquets, coléoptères), qu'il chasse essentiellement à l'affut, sur un sol à végétation rase. Il peut aussi capturer des proies en vol ou posées sur le feuillage ou des rameaux. Ses pelotes de réjection mesurent en moyenne 27 mm de long et 11 mm de diamètre ; elles sont composées essentiellement de résidus de chitines des insectes ingurgités mais sont friables et difficiles à trouver.
Le Petit-duc affiche un comportement territorial en période de reproduction. En dehors, les individus sont plutôt sociables. Dès que les mâles arrivent dans leur aire de nidification, ils marquent leur territoire. La femelle pond entre 3 et 5 œufs dans une cavité d'arbre ou de mur et les couve seule pendant 20 à 31 jours. Des cas de polygamie sont possibles lorsque les ressources alimentaires et les gîtes abondent. Les poussins s'essaient à la chasse vers le 45-50ème jour mais continuent d'être ravitaillés par les parents jusqu'à 60 jours.
Le Petit-duc scops vit dans les régions chaudes et sèches aux paysages ouverts et plantés de vieux arbres (vergers, parcs, allées d'arbres, bosquets et lisières de forêts feuillues clairsemées). Il fréquente donc aussi bien les milieux cultivés extensivement que les agglomérations, au contact des humains.
Les individus de Petit-duc scops qui nichent en France sont des migrateurs transsahariens. Le départ des zones de nidifications commence dès le mois d'août et le retour intervient au plus tard dans la seconde moitié d'avril. Les populations de Corse et des îles d'Hyères sont sédentaires. L'attachement au territoire semble très marqué, même chez les individus migrateurs qui reviennent donc chaque année nicher au même endroit.
Manifestation vocale : Voix puissante et flûtée, monotones et sans fioriture. Chant territorial composé d'une suite de tiou rythmés, lancés avec vigueur et s'atténuant aussitôt sur un ton aigu.

The map presents a summary at the 10 x 10 km grid of the observation data for the species transmitted to the SINP. These data have been subjected to validation filters.
The map presents a reference distribution layer of the species at the scale of departments and marine sectors. The presence and absence data were established by expertise within a network of partners. This reference distribution is used in the validation process of the SINP data at the INPN level.
