Le cloporte commun est d'assez grande taille (jusqu'à 18 mm de longueur totale).
Diagnose :
Le genre Oniscus est caractérisé par l'absence de pseudotrachées sous le pléon, le flagelle des antennes en 3 segments, un telson terminé par une pointe longue et fine et un pléon dans le prolongement du péréion. Les Oniscus ne sont pas capables de volvation. O. simoni se distingue d'O. asellus par sa coloration plus brune, sa taille inférieure (12 mm) et son pléon caréné et orné de protubérances médianes.. Sa couleur est grisâtre avec souvent quelques taches jaune pâle sur le dos et les épimères clairs.
Détermination :
La détermination est relativement aisée, tant à vue que sur photo. La distinction d'avec O. simoni porte sur le pléon, qui est lissé chez asellus et caréné, pourvu de protubérances, chez simoni.
Période d'observation :
Ce cloporte peut s'observer toute l'année ; il est dépourvu de pseudo-trachées et doit donc vivre dans une atmosphère humide. Il est surtout actif la nuit et se déplace assez lentement en se plaquant sur son support lorsqu'il est inquiété.
Biologie-ethologie :
Le plus souvent associé à des végétaux morts dans des endroits humides. La mue intervient en 2 temps, d'abord l'arrière puis l'avant. Sa longévité est d'environ 2 ans. La femelle pond une trentaine d'œufs d'où sortent des juvéniles. L'espèce est détritivore et se nourrit principalement d'éléments végétaux en décomposition et des petits organismes associés. Il participe au recyclage de la matière organique morte. Une bactérie intracellulaire du genre Wolbachia agit sur le sexe et induit une féminisation. Les forêts humides de basse et moyenne altitude constituent son habitat d'origine : éboulis, fentes de rochers, feuilles mortes, souches et vieux troncs ; il peut se rencontrer également près de la mer. Ce cloporte est devenu anthropophile et il se trouve aussi dans les jardins, composts, serres, amas de détritus, caves et à l'intérieur des habitations humides.
Biogéographique et écologie :
Il est présent dans toute l'Europe à l'exclusion des secteurs les plus septentrionaux ; il est rare en zone méditerranéenne. Il a été introduit ailleurs dans le monde, en particulier en Amérique du Nord (Canada et USA).
