The Mammal Collection contains over 28,000 specimens including skins and skeletons. Its main geographic coverage is Arizona and Sonora but there is also broad, worldwide representation at the family level. This is the largest mammal collection in the state, and it has ranked 21st in size among all North American collections of Recent mammals. The Mammal Collection was built by several individuals starting with Herbert Brown around the turn of the century. In particular, Emeritus Professor Lendell Cockrum was its main developer. Dr. Yar Petryszyn managed the collection for many years before retiring in 2007 as Collection Manager. The collection is under the direction of Dr. Peter Reinthal and is managed by Melanie E. Bucci.
