This dataset is the first and complete source of information about diversity, hosts and distribution of symbiotic copepods (Copepoda, Crustacea) reported living on octocorals (Octocorallia) of the World.
The dataset combines information on all (880) known records of 185 species of copepods representing 52 genera, 17 families and 3 orders discovered worldwide associated with 181 species of octocorals representing 72 genera, 27 families and 3 orders. It includes information about taxonomy of hosts and symbionts, the names and coordinates of all known 215 sampling sites, the depth and date of each sampling event, as well as references to all 84 articles.
The number of currently known octocorallian hosts of copepod crustaceans is just over 5% of all known species of octocorals, considering by us as poorly explored potential hosts of copepods.
