45.8 - Western Palaearctic holly woods

Description

Woods dominated by tall arborescent Ilex aquifolium. They occur in the supra-Mediterranean level of Sardinia and Corsica and in Atlantic mountains of northwestern Spain, mostly as a facies of the relict yew-holly forests (unit 42.A7). Other scattered occurrences exist, in particular, in England, as a facies of Atlantic acidophilous beech-oak forests of unit 41.52, of Germano-Baltic beech forests of unit 41.121 or of Atlantic neutrophile beech forests of unit 41.132, in Scotland and in Ireland.
