Descriptif officiel

Offshore (deep) circalittoral habitats with coarse sands and gravel or shell. This habitat may cover large areas of the offshore continental shelf although there is relatively little quantitative data available. Such habitats are quite diverse compared to shallower versions of this habitat and generally characterised by robust infaunal polychaete and bivalve species. Animal communities in this habitat are closely related to offshore mixed sediments and in some areas settlement of Modiolus modiolus larvae may occur and consequently these habitats may occasionally have large numbers of juvenile M. modiolus. In areas where the mussels reach maturity their byssus threads bind the sediment together, increasing stability and allowing an increased deposition of silt leading to the development of the biotope A5.622.

Habitat de sable grossier et de gravier ou de coquilles du circalittoral inférieur au large des côtes (en eau profonde). Cet habitat peut couvrir de grandes étendues du plateau continental au large des côtes, mais relativement peu de données quantitatives sont disponibles. Ce type d’habitat est très diversifié par comparaison aux habitats semblables en eau peu profonde. Il est généralement caractérisé par une endofaune robuste de polychètes et de bivalves. Les biocénoses animales de cet habitat sont étroitement liées aux sédiments hétérogènes présents au large des côtes, et dans certaines zones, il peut y avoir des recrutements de Modiolus modiolus, et donc de temps à autre un grand nombre de M. modiolus juvéniles. Dans les zones où les moules arrivent à maturité, leur byssus cimente les sédiments, ce qui augmente leur stabilité et la quantité de limon qui se dépose, et donc le développement de l’habitat A5.622.
