Descriptif officiel

In shallow, circalittoral non-cohesive muddy sand (typically less than 20% silt/clay) abundant populations of the brittlestar Amphiura brachiata may occur with other echinoderms such as Astropecten irregularis, Asterias rubens, Ophiura ophiura and Echinocardium cordatum. Other infaunal species typically include Mysella bidentata, Lanice conchilega and Magelona filiformis. This biotope is likely to form part of the non-cohesive/cohesive muddy sand communities, which make up the 'off-shore muddy sand association' described by other workers (Jones 1951; Mackie 1990). It is possible that in some areas this biotope forms an epifaunal overlay which may cover a range of biotopes in years of good recruitment but does not develop into a settled or established community.

Descriptif en français

Sable vaseux non cohésif circalittoral en eau peu profonde (contenant typiquement moins de 20 % de limon), hébergeant d’abondantes populations de l’ophiure Acrocnida brachiata. D’autres échinodermes tels que Astropecten irregularis, Asterias rubens, Ophiura ophiura et Echinocardium cordatum peuvent être présents. L’endofaune comprend entre autres Kurtiella bidentata, Lanice conchilega et Magelona filiformis. Cet habitat est susceptible de faire partie des habitats de sable vaseux cohésif ou non cohésif formant l’association « off‐shore muddy sand association » décrite par d’autres auteurs (Jones, 1951 ; Mackie, 1990). Dans certaines zones, il est possible que cet habitat, au cours des années favorables au recrutement, constitue une épifaune couvrant une variété d’habitats mais qu’il ne se développe pas au point de constituer un habitat établi.
