Descriptif officiel

Dense beds of the oyster Ostrea edulis can occur on muddy fine sand or sandy mud mixed sediments. There may be considerable quantities of dead oyster shell making up a substantial portion of the substratum. The clumps of dead shells and oysters can support large numbers of Ascidiella aspersa and Ascidiella scabra. Sponges such as Halichondria bowerbanki may also be present. Several conspicuously large polychaetes, such as Chaetopterus variopedatus and terebellids, as well as additional suspension-feeding polychaetes such as Myxicola infundibulum and Sabella pavonina may be important in distinguishing this biotope, whilst the Opisthobranch Philine aperta may also be frequent in some areas. A turf of seaweeds such as Plocamium cartilagineum, Nitophyllum punctatum and Spyridia filamentosa may also be present. This biotope description may need expansion to account for oyster beds in England.

Bancs denses d’huîtres Ostrea edulis sur sédiments hétérogènes de sable fin vaseux ou de vase sableuse. Il peut y avoir des quantités considérables de coquilles d’huîtres mortes constituant une partie substantielle du substrat. Les grappes de coquilles mortes et d’huîtres peuvent héberger un grand nombre de Ascidiella aspersa et Ascidiella scabra. Des éponges telles que Halichondria bowerbanki peuvent également être présentes. Plusieurs polychètes remarquablement gros tels que Chaetopterus variopedatus et des térébellidés, ainsi que des polychètes filtreurs tels que Myxicola infundibulum et Sabella pavonina, peuvent jouer un rôle important dans la distinction de cet habitat, alors que l’opisthobranche Philine aperta peut lui aussi être fréquent dans certaines zones. Un tapis d’algues telles que Plocamium cartilagineum, Nitophyllum punctatum et Spyridia filamentosa, peut aussi être présent. Cette description d’habitat peut devoir être complétée pour tenir compte des bancs d’huîtres de l’Angleterre.
