Description

Charophyte carpets developed on the bottom of unpolluted basic, lime-rich, oligotrophic to mesotrophic, deep, permanent waterbodies of the Palaearctic region, formed by, in particular, Chara aspera, Chara hispida, Chara tomentosa, Chara fragilis, Chara strigosa, Chara intermedia, Nitellopsis obtusa, Tolypella glomerata. Many of the diverse communities formed by these species have a highly fragmented, relict range and are severely threatened.
