Descriptif officiel

This biotope is known from only one location, the Aran Islands, Co. Galway (Ireland). Here, a limestone platform between 3 m and 6 m of depth is dominated by a dense population of the urchin Paracentrotus lividus, which heavily graze and burrow into the soft limestone. So intense is the grazing pressure that the rock appears completely bare, except for a coralline algal crust and occasional Laminaria hyperborea and Saccorhiza polyschides. The anthozoans Sagartia elegans and Corynactis viridis are also present, though at low abundance. The grazed kelp also extends deeper to 20 to 25 m further offshore. (Only one CB record within this biotope).
Situation: This rare biotope has only been recorded from one location and the neighbouring biotopes were not fully surveyed. In deeper water (30-40m) there is unit A4.121.

Descriptif en français

Cet habitat n’a été observé qu’à un endroit, les îles Aran, dans le comté de Galway (Irelande). À cet endroit, une plate‐forme, à une profondeur de 3 à 6 m, est dominée par une population dense de l’oursin Paracentrotus lividus, qui broute de façon intense et s’enfonce dans le calcaire tendre. La pression de broutage est si intense que la roche paraît complètement nue, à l’exception d’un encroûtement de corallinales et de quelques Laminaria hyperborea et Saccorhiza polyschides. Les anthozoaires Sagartia elegans et Corynactis viridis sont également présents mais peu abondants. Les laminaires broutés s’étendent aussi plus loin au large du rivage, jusqu’à une profondeur de 20 à 25 m (une seule observation de cet habitat).
Situation : Cet habitat rare n’a été observé qu’à un seul endroit, et les habitats avoisinants n’ont pas fait l’objet de levés exhaustifs. L’habitat A4.121 est présent à une profondeur plus grande (de 30 à 40 m).
