Description

Charophyte carpets developed on the bottom of unpolluted, slightly acid to neutral, lime-poor, oligotrophic or dystrophic, lakes and pools of oceanic and suboceanic lowland and collinar regions of the Palaearctic region, formed by, in particular, Nitella gracilis, Nitella capillaris, Nitella flexilis, Nitella translucens, Chara braunii, Chara fragifera, Chara delicatula. Many of the diverse communities formed by these species have a highly fragmented, relict range and are severely threatened.
