Description

Charophyte carpets developed on the bottom of unpolluted, neutral to slightly basic, oligotrophic to mesotrophic, lakes and pools of the Palaearctic region, mostly characteristic of premontane and moraine areas in zones of contact between siliceous and calcareous substrates, formed by, in particular, Nitella opaca, Nitella mucronata, Nitella syncarpa, Nitella tenuissima, Nitella hyalina, Chara coronata, Tolypella prolifera, sometimes accompanied by the chrysophyte alga Vaucheria dichotoma of class Xanthophyceae. Many of the diverse communities formed by these species have a highly fragmented, relict range and are severely threatened.
